MEADE "LUX" LEWIS was born in Chicago, ILL. in 1905. He became interested in music in his early 'teens after hearing a pianist play The Fives at a house party. Having no piano of his own he practiced wherever he could find an instrument. Later he lived in the same apartment building with Albert Ammons. Through their common interest in music, they became good friends and worked out many ideas together on the Ammons' piano. He became acquainted with Jimmy Yancey who helped him with the development of his boogie woogie style. He later profited by a short association with the late Clarence "Pinetop" Smith. His first professional work was at house parties. Later he played solo boogie at various night spots in the Chicago area. His first recordings which were made in the middle thirties, included two originals, Yancey Special and Honky Tonk Train Blues. These numbers did much toward popularizing the boogie style and eventually brought fame to their author. He went to New York late in 1938 where, with Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson he took part in a concert at Carnegie Hall. The three worked together as a trio for a short time, playing engagements at Cafe Society in New York and at the Hotel Sherman in Chicago. He then worked alone as a soloist.
